Nagpur Book Club’s October Book Meet was an evening to remember! We had a full house with over 60 bibliophiles attending the meet. It was a historic and proud day for NBC as our Founder, Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal launched his new book, ‘Kabir Revealed: Timeless Wisdom for the Modern Mind’ at the meet. Dr. Rawal graciously dedicated the very first copy of the book to Nagpur Book Club. Lata Tokhi welcomed Dr. Rawal on stage with a bouquet. Mrs. Pushpa Rathi accepted the book on behalf of Nagpur Book Club. Rohit Tokhi had a very interesting, interactive talk with Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal about his book on Kabir. Dr. Rawal shared some very interesting facts about how the idea for the book came into being. He shared his journey of researching and writing the book. Dr. Rawal shared very interesting anecdotes from the book, and very powerful metaphors and sayings of Kabir, which are still very relevant to modern times. Dr. Rawal said that even after 600 years, the teaching of Kabir are very important and relevant in modern times. Rohit Tokhi concluded that the book can be a perfect Kabir guide for the modern generation. The first book review of the evening was by Dinesh Dhawane, of the Hindi/Urdu book ‘Pehchaan’ by popular Nagpur poet Shahid Kabeer. Dinesh revealed that his poetry has been sung by many famous Ghazal singers, including Jagajit Singh. Dinesh said that he felt every couplet of Shahid Kabeer’a poetry is a masterpiece in itself. Kapil Sawaikar presented an insightful and powerful review of the book ‘Annihilation of Caste’ by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. The book is actually a powerful speech which was to be delivered by Dr. Ambedkar at an event in 1936, but he was not allowed to do so, as the topic was too bold for the time. Kapil said that Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar felt that the concept of caste is a major flaw in the Hindu religion, and no reform is possible without eliminating caste from society. Senior author and poet Abhay Pandey “Varishtt” presented his latest Hindi book “Aayugranth ke Prushth” (आयुग्रंथ के पृष्ठ) to Nagpur Book Club. In a talk with Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal, he said that the book is a collection of his pathos poetry, which convey feelings and episodes that he has experienced in his life. Abhay Pandey also read out some of his powerful poems at the meet. Lata Tokhi presented a brilliant review of the best seller book, ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, by Amor Towles. Lata said that the book transports the reader into post-revolution Russia, which you get to see through the eyes of Count Alexander Rostov, who is now stripped of his noble tiltle and belongings ans sentenced to house arrest for life. Lata felt that the book is one of the best fiction masterpieces to be published in the last decade or so. Dr. Aakanksha Bele presented a touching review of another best selling book, ‘Me before You’, by Jojo Moyes. Dr. Aakanksha said the book beautifully conveys that love does not need larger than life declarations and display. The characters of the book show that Love is in the small things, the unsaid emotions and little efforts that we take for our loved ones. She said that the book really resonates with her, and recommended that everyone should read the book to understand true love and relationships. VR Nagpur treated the attendees to sumptuous snacks and refreshments. Nagpur Book Club thanks Mr. Avinash and VR Nagpur for the beautiful venue and perfect arrangements. The book meet concluded with members continuing the informal literary conversation. Many new members joined us today. NBC members got together at members Ashok Rathi and Pushpa Rathi’s residence to celebrate their birthdays. We took the opportunity to have a cozy book meet at their beautiful home library. The following books were discussed:Lata Tokhi reviewed the book “The Kite Runner”, by Khalid Hosseini. Lata said she liked the book for its honest portrayal of everyday life and struggles in Afghanistan. Lata said she was disappointed by the end of the book, as she felt it was too cliched. She however recommended that everyone should read the book once.Dinesh Dhawane reviewed the Marathi book, “एक वादळी सूर बंत सिंग (Ek Vadali Sur Bant Singh)”, by Mukta Manohar. The book is a true life story of Sardar Bant Singh who was punished by upper caste Jats for fighting them in court for the rape of his daughter. He was beaten and maimed, yet he showed remarkable spirit and grit. He continues to fight for equality and dignity for millions like him, inspiring them with his revolutionary songs and his courage. Poonam Mishra reviewed the Hindi book “अनाद्यसूक्त : विज्ञानाध्यात्मिक दार्शनिक काव्य का अणु-चिंतन- Anadyasukta: Atomic Contemplation of Science-Spiritual Philosophical Poetry”. Poonam Mishra said that the author through his work, finds a parallel between modern science, astronomy and ancient Indian philosophy.Nirbhay Pareek reviewed the book “Anthem”, by Ayn Rand. The book is a dystopian fiction about a society in which all traces of individualism have been eliminated from every aspect of life. Nirbhay said at first he found it difficult to come to terms with every character in the book being identified by a number, and referring to themselves as “we”, instead of “I”. But the story progresses to a brilliant stage when the hero realises his self worth, and individuality, and decides to escape the shackles of society. The book embodies the values the author embraced in her personal philosophy of objectivism—reason, ethics, volition and individualism. Ashok Rathi reviewed the book “Immortality”, by the acclaimed Czech writer, Milan Kundera. Ashok Rathi shared an interesting anecdote about how he picked up the book by providence from a library clearance in Hong Kong.Ashok Rathi shared that the book has two plots that run side-by-side. In one plot, the character Bettina yearns for immortality in public memory, through her relationships, whereas in the other plot the character of Agnes yearns for a more quiet, private, understanding. Ashok Rathi too felt that the last couple of chapters of the book did not come through to his expectations. Although he felt that Milan Kundera’s power lies in his great intellect, keen and unerring observations of human behaviors, and his immaculate control of language to yield the exact effect he desires.Mrs Pushpa Rathi treated the members to a vast and delicious spread. Members engaged in many literary and non-literary intellectual conversation after dinner. It was one of the most satisfying book meets of late, reminding us of the days when Nagpur Book Club was in its infancy and we used to have cozy meets like these in each others homes.
